What pet parents spend on aging pets (7+ years) — and why it's worth it
Pets age faster than humans. A 7-year-old pet is roughly equivalent to a 50-year-old human. In Waterloo, senior pet care typically costs 2–3x more than standard adult care — but early detection of age-related conditions can add years to your pet's life.
Twice-yearly exams recommended for pets 7+
Organ function, thyroid, complete blood count
Glucosamine, chondroitin, omega-3s
Specialized nutrition for aging pets
NSAIDs or alternative pain therapies
One-time investment, improves quality of life
Higher anesthesia risk = more monitoring
Standard annual vet care in Waterloo: ~$218 · Senior annual care: ~$791
The extra investment catches kidney disease, diabetes, and cancer early — when treatment is most effective and least expensive.
Dental disease affects 80%+ of pets by age 3. By age 7, untreated dental disease in Waterloo pets often requires extractions ($805–$1405) on top of cleaning costs. Daily at-home dental care becomes non-negotiable for senior pets.
